GO BEARD OR GO HOME

Most lads, at one point or another, have thought about what they might look like with a big, bushy beard – whatever that beard style may be. We all fancy ourselves a hard man when the face scruff kicks in – think Greek gods, Neanderthals and lumberjacks - but not all of us know how to grow it out proper, minus the itching, irritation and the bizarre sprouting.

So read on, fearless lads about to go into the bristle-baring breach: 10 things to keep your eye on when wondering how to grow a beard to make sure your transition to Real Man goes nice and smooth. Once you have committed to growing a beard, make sure you know how to maintain it. Read all about the tips from the House.

1. IT TAKES TIME TO GROW A BEARD

Despite what your quick-sprouting five o-clock shadow might have you thinking, a complete beard for most men can take time. And by that, we mean anywhere between two to three months. You want to dedicate at least six months to the process because good things come to those who don’t shave. Expect a 2-4 week itchy period as the scruff grows in.

2. BEARD HAIR GROWS UNEVENLY

If you start to see an uneven beard, don’t take to the razor right away. This is a normal part of the process and, as mentioned in the previous step, is going to take time. It is not uncommon for certain areas to start growing in before others do. Most often, the chin and neck will grow first, followed by the sideburns and cheeks.

3. YOUR BEARD MIGHT NOT BE THE COLOUR YOU EXPECT

You might be surprised here mate. If you have brown hair, it’s entirely possible that your beard will grow in varying shades of blonde, brown and even red. But don’t sweat it, having a mix gives your beard (and therefore, you) some serious character.

4. USE A BALM OR OIL TO SHAPE & SOFTEN

A face full of fuzz requires taming to keep it from looking scruffy. After you've cleansed, you'll want to make sure your beard is nourished and kept in place. For longer beards, we recommend the Seriously Groomed Beard & Hair Balm, which deeply conditions the thickest beards while providing a touch of hold to keep it all in place. For something a bit lighter, try the Softer Touch Beard Oil. Great for all lengths, Softer Touch hydrates the beard and gives it a sleek, dry finish. No greasy residue here, mate. Plus, the scent will leave your face irresistibly kissable. It's our top-selling beard product for a reason.

5. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE COMB AND THE BRUSH

Take a comb your beard while it’s still wet to help remove any stray and damaged hairs. Once your beard is dry, switch to a fine boar bristle brush, using it to work in any balms or oils. A final smooth-over with your hands is always a good idea, to get that ideal shape. If you find yourself stuck with a comb or brush that keeps getting snagged in your beard, try some others to ensure you reduce potential damage. Regardless of the style of beard you choose, there should be a tool out there to keep it groomed.

6. CLEAN UP AROUND THE EDGES

A true beard professional touches up his scruff every couple of days. Fast growers may see their beards looking sloppy within a day or two. Whether you've hopped on the beard decal trend, or just want to keep your beard looking sharp, try the Sharp Cut Shaving Stick. This roll-on shave stick is perfect for targeted beard lines, allowing for clean application only on specific areas of the face. Clean up your lines or even try contouring. Oh, and it's TSA-approved, so it's PERFECT for travel.

7. YOU CAN AVOID A SMELLY BEARD

Smelly beard? You can do better than that. For those who like to keep it simple, a few drops of Softer Touch Beard Oil will take care of the stench, featuring our House Fragrance (created by David Beckham himself, so you know it's good).

8. BEARD DANDRUFF (BEARDRUFF) IS REAL

Yep. Also completely normal. Do not scratch, or you may end up with unwanted oils and bacteria. To avoid an itchy beard, rinse with lukewarm water. Next, exfoliate with the Get Groomed Purifying Beard Scrub (enriched with charcoal and gritty volcanic stone). Rinse clean and finish it off with the Greater Look Face Moisturizer, enriched with spirulina and quinoa extracts to strengthen the skin beneath the beard.

9. IT CAN CHANGE THE WAY PEOPLE LOOK AT YOU

Studies have shown that among women, bearded men were perceived as having higher parenting skills than their clean-shaven counterparts. In another study, men and women ranked bearded men as having the highest social status in a perception study. All that lark aside, at the end of the day the only perception that is truly important is your own. So if you’re happy, everyone else should be too.

10. YOU'LL GET ATTACHED TO YOUR BEARD STYLE

It makes sense. The more time you spend/invest in something, the more attached you’ll feel. It’s the reason for multitudes of beard blogs and scruffy-faced influencers. If you want to know which beard style best suits your lovely face, go and see this guide.
